Letter From The President of Sports 1 Marketing
The month of February is always an exciting time, especially because the Super Bowl occurs early in the month, and there is always so much excitement and anticipation surrounding the game. After the two previous years where I was preparing to broadcast the game, this year had a much different feel. My Seahawks weren’t in the game, but it brought on a different kind of excitement because a lot of my focus was directed towards what I would be representing.
My main goal at the Super Bowl this year was to promote fortheplayers.com, a website that provides information and answers to retired football players about the upcoming $1billion concussion settlement. To promote the cause I dedicated a lot of my time to Radio Row, doing anywhere from 15-20 interviews a day on that topic. As always when I attend the Super Bowl I do a number of corporate events for the NFL, including the NFL House, and on-location Super Bowl tailgate parties prior to the game. On Friday afternoon, I was one of the 50 invited Hall of Fame players that participated in the Merlin Olsen Hall of Fame Luncheon. I was also a special guest at the Wheels Up party on Saturday afternoon alongside Rich Eisen, Erin Andrews, Bruce Smith, among others. I had the chance to attend one of my marketing agent’s party, the Legacy Agency, at EPIC steakhouse for a really nice party where we also had dinner as a Sports 1 Marketing family afterward.
You can’t go to the Super Bowl without attending some of the great night parties. On Wednesday night we went to the Jay Glazer party, Thursday was the EA Sports party, usually one of the best at the Super Bowl, highlighted by Ludacris and Fallout Boy. On Friday, we attended the Leather and Laces party, and Saturday night Sports 1 Marketing hosted the celebrity gifting suite at the Maxim Party. We also hosted a number of clients at our large table at the party and enjoyed the entertainment by Lil’ Wayne and A$AP Rocky.
The game itself on Sunday was a great defensive battle and the difference was Denver’s ability to score off the turnovers they created, ultimately triumphing over Carolina 24-10.
After the Super Bowl, it was back to Seattle, where on Wednesday I spoke to a black studies class at the University of Washington about the history of the African American athlete. I’ve had the chance to do this the past three years and it’s something I look forward to. I cherish being able to give back to my alma mater and share my journey with the young students.
That evening I switched gears and attended the MTR Seattle Sports Star of the Year Awards, where I received the Royal Brougham Legend Award for my lifetime achievement in sports and amplifying the spirit of Washington.
Over the weekend, I celebrated my son Ryken’s 9th birthday. The following Tuesday I flew to Canton, OH to be involved in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Black History Month program. We had 500 kids from the Canton area and also streamed in satellite feeds from around the country for kids to chime in and ask questions. I loved sharing my journey to the Hall of Fame with the group and interacting with all the kids.
From Canton, I flew to Orange County to attend the Irvine Public School Foundation Top 100 awards celebration. The IPSF has become a very good partner of ours and we are involved in a lot of the local projects in the school district. The event celebrated the top 100 donors who support their foundation and we were proud to be a part of it.
From Orange County, I went up to Los Angeles over the weekend to celebrate my mother’s 87thbirthday. We took her to dinner at Paul Martin’s one night and all the Moon ladies prepared a big dinner feast on Sunday at my mom’s home to continue the celebration.
On Tuesday, we had a conference call with Sallie Sargent and members of the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee. We introduced ourselves and discussed how Sports 1 Marketing and myself could be more involved in promoting the Super Bowl next year.
On Thursday, I flew to Nashville to speak at the Dollar General Store’s Annual Gala in celebration of black history month. My talk was based on diversity and inclusion within the company and the overall celebration of the month.
From there I flew to Houston to spend the weekend with my kids and grandkids and, as always, there was an overabundance of eating. The spread of food included; Friday night at my favorite Mexican restaurant, Pappasito’s Cantina, Saturday night at Brasserie 19, and Sunday brunch at Churrascos in Sugar Land. In between all of my favorite Houston restaurants, my grandson had a freshman baseball tournament so I was able to see quite a few of his games.
I flew back to Seattle to round out the month and attended the Good Man Brand clothing company launch at Nordstrom. Russell Wilson is the main spokesperson for the new line, so I attended the event in support of him. I also had a site visit at the Motif Hotel to scout the location and see how the event will be produced for the upcoming Seattle Art Institute Fashion Show, where Crescent Moon will be the beneficiary.
February was obviously an exciting month because we began with the Super Bowl and ended with a lot of personal family time. The month of March is going to get very busy as we have 3 different Crescent Moon events coming up; the 18th Annual Seattle Art Institute Fashion Show, the 7th Annual Unstoppable Gala, and Trees for Houston Gala. I’m also looking forward to co-hosting the University of British Columbia Football Vanier Cup Celebration and Fundraiser in support of my good friend David Sidoo and the 13th Man Foundation. We will have lots to discuss with all those different events in next month’s newsletter.
