Letter From The President: Warren Moon

The month started out with Seafair going on in Seattle, a big yacht and boating weekend, which includes hydroplane races, a parade, gala, and the famous Blue Angels air show.  Our good friend Rob Angel has a huge annual Seafair party at his house on the lake where all the festivities take place.  Dave came up for the weekend and all our close friends had a great time celebrating the weekend in Seattle.

On Wednesday I traveled to Canton, OH for the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement festivities celebrating the leagues 50th year.  It was a big turnout as we had 114 Hall of Famers come to celebrate the induction of Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Charles Haley, Junior Seau, Will Shields, Mick Tingelhoff, Ron Wolf, and Bill Polian.  It’s always a great time to be back in Canton with my fellow Hall of Famers and greet the new guys coming in.

The Hall of Fame changed the schedule this year with the Gold Jacket Dinner now taking place on Thursday and a sold out Aerosmith concert of 22,000 people on Friday.  The record-breaking weekend continued as the induction ceremony on Saturday was in front of a sold-out crowd of 23,000 people.  When the weekend was complete it ended up as the largest Hall of Fame weekend in history including revenue generated.  Congratulations to George Veras and David Baker at the Hall of Fame and to everyone else involved in making it such a great weekend.

While in Canton I did an interview with NFL Media discussing my first Super Bowl memory, which took me back to Super Bowl I played at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1967 when I was 11 years old.  With the game being in Los Angeles, current broadcast rules at the time blacked it out on local TV, can you imagine that happening today?  Since it was unwatchable, I ended up playing football on the street with my friends and we would occasionally run over to the radio to check the score.  So there it is, my first Super Bowl memory I wasn’t even able to watch.

The following week I traveled to New York on Thursday, August 13th to participate in a flag football game with the NFL media production department.  Since I was the only quarterback I played for both teams therefore I couldn’t lose, yet I also somehow managed to be on the losing team.

From New York it was back to Seattle for the first preseason game of the year against the Denver Broncos.  While we lost 22-20, it was good to be back into the booth, get reacquainted with my broadcast partner Steve Raible, and get the season underway, unofficially at least.

The following day I was invited to the Seattle Gift Show where I spoke to a group of young entrepreneurs about the challenges of starting a new business, the payoffs of hard work, perseverance, and how to brand yourself and continuously improve it.

In the two days following, I attended the Seahawks Rumble at the Ridge celebrity golf tournament, attended by many Seahawk alumni including: Jim Zorn, Dave Craig, Curt Warner, Ricky Waters, and Hall of Famers such as Lynn Swann and Mike Haynes.  The money raised directly benefitted the Virginia Mason Hospital. The tournament also coincides with the PGA Champions Tour and is a kickoff to a great week in Snoqualmie.

I then traveled up to Canada to visit the University of British Columbia two-a-day football practices since I recently got involved in helping them rebuild their program through fundraising and motivating their players.  I spoke to the team, had a dinner with their 13th man board, and attended two practices.  It was great to go up there and contribute to young Canadian athletes who are trying to become professionals; I always enjoy giving back to the country where my career started.

That weekend I traveled with the Seahawks to Kansas City for the second preseason game.  I lived in Kansas City during my playing career for three years and still maintain good relationships there.  Dave flew out for the weekend and we had a meeting with our newest client, Athlete Network.  That evening I had dinner with a good friend and Hall of Famer Bobby Bell and enjoyed the great KC BBQ at Char Bar.  I always try to find a new BBQ place when I’m in Kansas City and Char Bar gets my recommendation.

The following day we played the Chiefs losing a close one 19-13. However, we got a chance to see a lot of young players participate in that game making strong impressions with the first round of roster cuts closely approaching.

After Kansas City I was down in Irvine for Sports 1 Marketing’s 5th annual Fantasy Football draft where everyone had a great time, including all the bad food you can think of.  I wasn’t too happy with my draw as the 12th pick, but had a good draft overall highlighted by Drew Brees and Jamal Charles.  We have a 14-man league which makes it more difficult and waters down the talent, however it was a lot of fun and we’ll see how the season works out and ultimately who wins the Lombardi trophy.

After the draft we headed up the Manhattan Beach for the Tastemakers of LA event held by our partners Trine, (formerly Beck and Score) who specialize in high quality sports and entertainment experiences.  Afterwards we had dinner at Nick’s steakhouse and got together with a lot of friends.

Friday we headed down to Del Mar for a good time at the races, although we didn’t win any money it was just fun to be in the atmosphere.  After the racetrack we continued south to the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego for dinner before finishing the night at Omnia to celebrate a good friends birthday.

On Saturday, we had a Sports 1 Marketing tailgate party at Qualcomm prior to the Seahawks vs. Chargers game.  The Seahawks played an uneventful game but had a great ending kicking a 60-yard field goal with 20 seconds left through the hot humid air.

After the game was over we headed over to the airstrip and caught a jet to Las Vegas where we continued the birthday celebrations with dinner at Nobu then ended the night at Hyde to round out the birthday celebrations.

Extremely exciting way to start the month with the Pro Football Hall of Fame weekend and to end it with a Seahawk win and great trip to Las Vegas, really looking forward to the month of September when football is real.  Only 16 games and they all count.
