October Newsletter

Letter From The President

The month of September brings the start of NFL football season and my favorite time of the year.  We also have a few Crescent Moon events to look forward to in the next month; it should be a great month to talk about.

I started off the month with a bang, with the Washington Redskins deciding to bench Robert Griffin III in favor of Kirk Cousins.  TMZ Sports asked me about how RG3’s scenario has played since being drafted first overall in 2012.  I gave my honest opinion that he’s a great player in an offense not suited for him or his skill set.  I think he needs to go where a team is willing to devote themselves offensively to the things he does best.  Additionally, as an individual he needs to put more time into football than his off the field activities: social media, endorsements, etc., and focus on being best football player he can be.

That evening I went to the Willow Lodge in Seattle to attend a meet and great function for Visa with their corporate clients and customers.  They served food and drinks; I spoke for a few minutes about my career and did a Q&A to wrap up.  It was a fun evening for the local people involved with Visa.  I really enjoy doing the corporate events, not only in Seattle but also all over the county.

Finally we got to the last preseason game, which is always a treat knowing the following weeks game is for real. It seems we always play the Raiders in our 4th pre-season game.  The main goal is to get through the final game with no injuries to the starters and a final chance for the young players to make their case for a spot on the final roster.  Our young guys played well and we beat them 31-21.   The sad part about the last pre-season game is the looming roster cut and the players who become unemployed.  A lot of these guys have put tremendous amounts of dedication and hard work into realizing their dream of playing in the NFL and it unfortunately comes to an end for a lot of guys across the league.

Since we played on Thursday we were off for Labor Day weekend, so I headed down to San Diego with some friends of mine.  On Friday evening we went to Nobu for dinner, one of my favorite sushi restaurants across the county.  We spent the rest of the evening walking around the gas lamp district in San Diego having a great time.  The following day I spent the afternoon in Pacific Beach and had dinner that evening at the famous steakhouse Lou & Mickey’s back in the gas lamp.  I flew back to Seattle on Labor Day and finished the weekend with a BBQ at my godparents’ home.

On Thursday I flew to Connecticut to celebrate a good friends birthday with dinner at J Gilberts in Glastonbury, then went to a place called Rooftop 120 to celebrate the rest of the evening.  The following night I saw Florida Georgia Line, Frankie Ballard and Thomas Rhett at the Xfinity Theatre in Hartford.

From Connecticut it was on to St. Louis for our opening game of the season against the Rams.  It was a really good football game that went into overtime. Unfortunately, St. Louis beat us with a field goal.  The Rams have always given us trouble in St. Louis beating us the last three of four times.  This game, similar the past four, came down to the end and ultimately they made more plays than we did beating us 34-31.

On Wednesday the 16th, I flew to New York for the Joe Namath Celebrity Golf Classic benefiting the March of Dimes foundation.  That evening was a casino party to kick off the golf tournament and we had an opportunity to spend time with the March of Dimes families, take photos and learn their stories.  The following morning I participated in the golf tournament at the beautiful Bethpage golf course in Farmingdale, NY.  There were about 150 different celebrities in attendance, including Hall of Famers from all major sports.  Joe has tremendous support and continues to bring together the greatest collection of former players that I have ever been around. Collectively, we were able to raise over $1 million for the March of Dimes foundation.

After the golf tournament, I hopped on a plane back to Seattle for my major fundraiser, Fashion First, part of Seattle’s Fashion Week.  This is the 12th year they’ve put it on and we had an opportunity to be a beneficiary along with the Inspire Youth Project.  It was a fun night of fashion; we had an auction, pre and post cocktail receptions and a post-party.  Everyone had a great evening seeing some of the newest fashion and achieving our goal of raising over $100,000 for my Crescent Moon Foundation and the Inspire Youth Project.

The next morning I flew to Chicago, en route to Green Bay, and spent the evening with friends.  We had dinner at Siena Tavern, which had a great vibe, good energy, and outstanding Italian food.

The next morning I drove to Green Bay to meet up with the team and get ready for our Sunday night clash with the Packers.  We were facing a great football team with big time revenge for us after beating them in last years NFC championship.  As with the Rams game it was closely fought but Packers got the best of us in the end, so we went back to Seattle 0-2.

The St. Louis road trip began a busy travel schedule and I was almost at the finish line. Hours after arriving back in Seattle from Green Bay, I was again on a plane to Los Angeles to help co-host the GEANCO Foundation Gala at the Sunset Gower studios in Hollywood honoring the extremely talented actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and David Oyelowo.  I was only in LA 5 hours, but I made a commitment to be a host because I strongly believe in the foundations cause. GEANCO provides medical care in Africa for people in need and their ultimate goal is to build a first class medical facility in Nigeria.  I headed back to Seattle that evening to tape Seahawks All-Access the following morning.

Finally I got a chance to relax and stay in one place for five days; it was great to be home, sleep in my own bed, spend time with my son, and regroup for our home opener against the Chicago Bears.  There was a lot of excitement leading up to Sunday because Kam Chancellor had decided to end his hold out and return to the team.  We went out and used that energy, enthusiasm, and with our 12th man crowd we beat the bears 26-0 to get back on the winning track

On Friday prior to the game, I was at Century Link field for the unveiling of the Seahawks Wall of Legends that’s been installed in the stadium to honor the greatest Seahawks of all time.  Being one of the honorees, Steven Largent and I were in attendance to represent the group of players being honored.

To finish my busy month, I attended a meet and greet appearance for Lincoln Financial as a favor to Bob Guiney, a good friends of mine who now works with them.  They are trying to recreate the success of the company at the Pacific Northwest office through spurring excitement and motivating the brokers.

I think you can tell by how much I traveled it was a busy, yet very successful month in many ways. We are looking forward to another fundraiser in Kansas City with the American Royal in October.  We will have a lot more to discuss on that in next months newsletter.  I hope you enjoyed my travels and insight this past month and I look forward to having more things to discuss in November.
