Letter From The President: Warren Moon
The month of April started out with a great weekend in Houston for the NCAA Final Four, which we discussed last month.
After Houston, I did an interview for a book called Facing the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the teams I played the most in my career. We talked about all the great players they had and how I handled and planned for playing against their tough defense.
After the interview, I flew to Vancouver to be apart of the University of British Colombia’s football championship ring celebration and dinner. I have developed a great relationship with their “13th man” board and consulted with their program, helping them get to the next level in Canadian University Football. I also have a relationship with their quarterback, Michael O’Connor, helping to mentor him on and off the field. I spoke that evening about why it’s great to give back to college athletics and the impressive accomplishments this program has been able to achieve in such a quick turn around. Winning a national championship is a phenomenal achievement and staying on top is no easy feat because everyone is gunning for you.
The biggest reward of the evening was when the team presented me with a championship ring, which I was not expecting. David Sidoo, the head of the 13th man board, and I have a developed really good relationship, and he’s become a big supporter of my foundation as well. Thank you David, for including me in such special evening for the UBC program.
The next morning I flew back down to Seattle for the day, then got on a red-eye to Augusta for the Masters. Throughout the week we visited a lot of different hospitality houses with our clients and provided virtual gifting for one of our partner’s parties. It’s always a great time at the Masters and the best part for me is seeing peoples’ reaction when they step on the course for the first time, it’s such a magical place. Additionally, the week always provides a great networking opportunity for us, our employees, and for our clients.
Back from Augusta, I did an interview with ESPN.com about Robert Griffin III, discussing whether he can rebound after a long slide in his career. There’s been a lot of talk about whether he will be able to rebound or not and if he will be the same player as when he came into the league. Personally, I believe he can if he dedicates himself to football along with the help of a good head coach in Cleveland’s Hue Jackson.
I was then back in Houston to do an appearance for PepsiCo and all their different brands as they gear up for Super Bowl in Houston next year. There was an advertising preview event set up for grocery stores to come in and see the benefits of displays for next year’s festivities and how to drive the most sales for snacks prior to the big game. Because of my time playing in Houston, I was afforded the opportunity to get everyone amped up for next year’s big game.
Another notable interview I did this month was for the Minnesota Vikings website to talk about my time there, and my opinion of Teddy Bridgewater and Adrian Peterson. You can read that interview here.
I was down to Orange County for the week and my son Josh was in town for training. We are excited to have him join our sales team and it was great to introduce him to our team in Irvine.
The next day I drove up to Pasadena to host a private luncheon with the Rose Bowl’s top donors and had a Q&A with them about my experience in the Rose Bowl and football in general. It was a great way to raise money for the stadium, Legacy Foundation, and interact with the people who make it all possible.
I did an article with the Orange County register about Leigh Steinberg, a great friend of mine and business associate who has turned his life around and is doing a great job in the sports business world again. He is representing first round draft pick Paxton Lynch, and I was excited to be apart of the article chronicling his inspiring redemption story.
Then, I flew to New York to participate in the GTSM public signing at the Garden State exhibition center in New Jersey. I had the chance to see a lot of great Hall of Famers like Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Dan Fouts, and others who were there signing with me. I stayed in New York City and visited some of my favorite restaurants, including STK. I also saw the Book of Mormon, which was hilarious, and went to Lavo after for some great Italian food.
I flew back to Seattle the next morning to join the CBS draft special on Monday Morning Quarterback with Rich Gannon, Steve Beuerlein, and Adam Schein. We each did a critique on the quarterback class coming into the draft this year.
I came back down to Southern California and did an interview in Burbank for the Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibition called “The Game of Life”. We discussed my life with football and what it’s like to be in the Hall of Fame. The interview will be featured in an upcoming interactive exhibit where people can learn more about Hall of Famers. The Hall of Fame has done a great job and even included holograms of guys who have passed away.
I did an interview for a coffee table book called the Epic Legacy of the Edmonton Eskimos discussing my time with the team, winning five consecutive Grey Cups and the role I played in the legacy of the organization.
Later that day, I drove out to Palm Desert to be apart of the Stagecoach weekend of country music. I joined a bunch of friends and enjoyed the sunshine during the day, rested, and relaxed. Eric Church had a great performance Friday Night, Carrie Underwood was outstanding Saturday night and Luke Bryan stole the show on Sunday.
That was all for the month of April, I can’t believe May is already here. Now we start getting into minicamps after the draft and see what these rookies will look like as they transition to the pros. I have some upcoming vacations planned for myself, including the Kentucky Derby, Alaska, and Kenya, which is one of my favorite events of the year.
