Around the Moon

I can’t believe it’s already June! We’re full swing in Summer, and it seems like this year is flying by, but we’ve had a lot of positive and great things happening in a short period of time and June was no different.

The month started off traveling back to Kansas City, a city where I ended my career but I have a lot of good personal and business relationships, and that’s what our trip was about, business.

With our Aggregated Marketing Platform and Processing For a Cause, I had meetings with the Kansas City Royals, Chiefs, and Sporting KC to present these business opportunities to them.  We had some very successful meetings from our time there.  I’ve also been involved with the American Royale, where we partner with local radio station AM810 every year.  I met with the station’s president to discuss a strategy for building off last year’s fundraiser and success.

I can’t visit Kansas City without stopping at one of my favorite BBQ places, Johnny’s BBQ.  I also indulged in some great junk food at the Royals baseball game, as different stadiums have become very creative in ways they present their ballpark food these days. Before we left, we enjoyed the Keith Urban concert at the beautiful outdoor Verizon Arena.

From Kansas City, I flew to Houston for a memorabilia signing in Katy, Texas and it was great to see so many of my old Houston Oilers fans from my days there. I also got a chance to see my family, children, and grandkids and we had some great quality time together.  My niece and nephew both graduated high school, so I organized a big graduation dinner at Maggiano’s to congratulate them on their success.

After my time in Houston, I flew to Buffalo, NY to take part in Jim Kelly’s 30th annual golf tournament to support his Foundation.  He hosted a gala the night prior with a huge auction and the following day a very fun and festive golf tournament, although not a whole lot of golf was actually played.  It was a great time and together we raised a lot of money for Jim’s charity.

From Buffalo, we flew into New York City for a dinner reception with our partners at L’oreal, a key client, and supporter of our events and charitable foundation.  It was a great time in New York City and we also ate at one of my favorite steakhouses, STK in Midtown.

Back in Seattle, I went to the Matt Talbot Center Breakfast of Champions and spoke about the upcoming season for the Seahawks.  The center has been around for 30 years and they do a tremendous job supporting people of need in the community.

After breakfast, I met with the University of Washington fundraising and Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity about the scholarship program I am involved in with Steve Pool.  We met to see how we can continue to build this successful program and grow it for the coming years.

The following week I was back down in Orange County at the S1M offices for a number of meetings.  One of those meetings was with a producer from a number of hit reality television shows to discuss a couple of future projects in the works.

Back in Seattle, I spoke at the University of Washington Huskies Quarterback Academy camp.  I spoke with the campers about what’s required of them to make an impact at the next level and the tools they need to succeed.  I enjoy sharing my knowledge with the young guys because I’ve been in that position before and it’s always nice to have help and advice in pursuing your dreams.

I flew back down to Southern California and had dinner with some good friends of mine from my old neighborhood in Manhattan Beach.

The next morning, we embarked on our trip to Kenya along with my executive assistant Iris, Dave, his wife, and their 17-year-old-daughter.

We landed in Nairobi and spent the night in a beautiful bed and breakfast, House of Waine.  The next morning, we took a short flight to the Maasai Mara, where we went on a photo safari for three days.  As soon as we landed and started driving towards our lodging, we saw a group of eight giraffes within 15-20 yards of us.  Right there and then I knew we weren’t in Orange County anymore.  We saw pretty much every animal you could want to see in the first two hours driving to our lodge, including lions, elephants, wildebeests, and a leopard with her 2 cubs.

There are five animals the locals speak about that you should see when you are there: rhinos, lions, cheetahs, hippos, and elephants and fortunately we were able to see them all.

After the Safari was over, we flew to Bogani for the rest of our trip.  That is where we met up with the people from “Me to We” and the rest of the group from the Unstoppable Foundation, the real reason why we went.  We got to see the progress that has been made in the village we all helped fundraise for.  They now have access to clean water, cattle, milk, and the ability to create income for themselves.  Shelter and education are also now a staple in the communities and improved to a state that they’ve never been before.

What was so impressive about the trip was seeing the happiness, gratitude, and appreciation on all the faces despite how little they really have.

Overall, it was a life-changing experience for me and our whole group.  The appreciation I have for the people of Kenya is at the highest level.  I am so thankful that I’m in the position to help people in need.  The Kenyan people are extremely hard workers and do not take for granted the opportunities they receive.  I look forward to doing the trip again and hopefully taking my son along with me next time.

June was a month that started off with a lot of great business and meetings in Kansas City but ended in the continent of Africa. It’s extremely rewarding to see my Crescent Moon Foundation making a positive impact locally with our scholarship nights.  But to see us making an impact globally is something I am very proud of.
