Happy New Years from David Meltzer and Warren Moon!
Before we can celebrate that, let’s go back and talk about December, one of my favorite months of the year. With the NFL season nearing playoffs, college football bowl games, and the holiday season you can see we have a lot to discuss.
The month started with great news when one of my good friends Bob Guiney and his fiancé announced their engagement with a party at our friend’s house. It was a fitting way to start the holiday season with great friends who deserve each other.
On Saturday, I flew to Minneapolis to meet the team for our game against the Vikings. That evening I had dinner with our production crew at Manny’s steakhouse, which serves one of the best bone-in rib eye’s I’ve had in the country.
We played the Vikings on Sunday, a game I’m sometimes split on because of my allegiance to teams I played with during my career. However, there was no question I was rooting for the Seahawks that day as we put on a dominating performance winning 38-7.
I flew back to Seattle to tape Seahawks All-Access on Monday morning, then immediately got back on an airplane and flew to Houston to meet David Meltzer. We met with Heard Robbins, a law firm in Houston, to discuss Sports 1 Marketing’s role in the concussion settlement. They are utilizing our platform to get the word out to retired players and their families about the protocol and procedures in order to qualify for compensation from the settlement. Over the course of the next three to four months we will be trying to get the word out to as many players as we can through meetings, interviews, and one-on-one relationships to let them know critical timelines and required paperwork to qualify for compensation.
We have developed a website called www.fortheplayers.com and a toll-free number 1-844-84PLAYERS for anyone seeking more information.
After Houston, it was on to Baltimore for our game against the Ravens on December 13th. On Saturday evening, I had a great dinner with my old friend Chad Steele, who’s currently the Ravens VP of Public Relations.
We put on another dominating road performance against the Ravens, beating them 35-6 and Russell Wilson threw for 5 touchdown passes tying his career high. It was a long but enjoyable flight back to Seattle having won consecutive road games.
That week I flew down to the Sports 1 office for our company holiday festivities. Prior to our holiday party, we had our annual tree ornament celebration. All our employees brought in ornaments that held a special meaning to them and discussed why they chose that ornament. That evening we had our holiday party at El Adobe in San Juan Capistrano, which was attended by friends, business associates, partners, and our largest holiday party yet. We also had everyone bring a toy to contribute to our annual toy drive. It was a great evening of food and drinks reflecting on the successful year we had.
After the holiday party, I flew to Albuquerque, New Mexico to speak at the New Mexico Bowl. I attended a dinner the first night with all the bowl executives, sponsors, coaches and the two teams who were playing: Arizona Wildcats and New Mexico Lobos.
On Friday, I spoke at a luncheon to both teams and about 700 other people in attendance. I was asked to talk about the bowl experience and how valuable it is to take advantage of the opportunity for both the young players and the departing seniors. Even though I played in so many pro games I still remember my bowl game as being one of the most exciting playing experiences, as I played for the purity and love of the game without any certainty of a career moving forward.
I flew back to Seattle to prepare for our game against the Cleveland Browns and we extended our win streak to five beating them 30-13.
Throughout the course of the month, I have been doing a lot of interviews on my role in the concussion settlement. Among my interviews have included appearances on CNBC, Colin Cowherd, print interviews with The Players Tribune, Bleacher Report, and many others.
I spent Christmas Eve with my young son and opened gifts with him, then I jumped on a red eye flight and flew to Houston where my four other kids and five grandchildren live. It was nice getting to spend a few days at Christmas with my family and celebrate my favorite time of year.
I was back on a plane to Seattle for our game Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. They always play us well and matchup strongly against us so we knew it was going to be a tough game. Unfortunately, we played arguably our worst game of the season with three turnovers and got beat 23-17.
After Seattle, I traveled back down to Orange County on the 30th to celebrate the New Year. On New Years Eve I went to Fleming’s Steakhouse with friends for dinner before heading to the KARMA Foundation party in Beverly Hills.
I’m looking forward to discussing January with you all next month. Between my festivities at the 102nd Rose Bowl, NFL playoffs and our Pro Bowl event in Hawaii; we will have a lot to discuss.
