Letter From The President
The New Year started out bright and early with a Rose Bowl party at the home of Mark Shuster, who’s on the Rose Bowl Legacy board of directors with me. Mark and his family have a beautiful home near the stadium and hosted a wonderful catered party for all the guests.
After stopping by the Legacy tailgate at the stadium, we made our way into the game. Even though Iowa fans out traveled Stanford, I was still cheering for the Pac 12. Christian McCaffrey quickly showed why he was the Heisman runner-up taking an 80-yard pass for a touchdown on the second play of the game. Although Iowa managed to put up some points late in the game, Stanford dominated in a 45-16 victory.
I left the next day for Scottsdale to prepare for our Sunday game against the Cardinals. The night before the game I had a great dinner with my production crew at Mastro’s in downtown Scottsdale. On Sunday, we really got after the Cardinals and beat them 36-6 in a dominating performance.
The following week I was back down in Southern California for a series of interviews. I stopped by the Rich Eisen and Yahoo Sports studios and continued fulfilling my spokesperson duties for the NFL concussion settlement. We talked extensively about concussions; what we know about them now compared to what we didn’t know back when I played. We also discussed how it’s affecting guys and what the league is now doing to make the game safer.
Later that evening we went to the London Hotel in Los Angeles for the 7th Annual Unbridled Eve Kentucky Derby Prelude Party. The pre-party kick starts the festive mood for all the Hollywood Celebrities who attend the Derby in May. The evening benefits Blessings in a Backpack, which provides kids with a backpack full of supplies and food for the weekend who otherwise are at risk of going hungry. After the party, we went to BOA steakhouse to celebrate David’s birthday, one of the many celebrations we had.
The next day I flew from Los Angeles to Minneapolis to prepare for our wildcard playoff game against the Vikings. As par for the course I find my favorite steakhouse in whatever city I’m in, and in Minneapolis, it happens to be Manny’s. If you’ve never been, you have to try the bone-in rib eye and hash browns, one of my favorites around. I had dinner with my production crew and fellow Hall of Famer John Randle, a teammate of mine with the Vikings.
Sunday morning was our game in the bitter cold with temperatures reaching as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Both teams gutted through it and showed amazing perseverance in some of the worst possible conditions in the history of the NFL. Fortunately for us, the Seahawks prevailed to win 10-9.
After the game, I flew to Vegas for part two of David’s birthday extravaganza. We enjoyed a big group dinner at Carnevino and celebrated afterward at the new Drais.
It was good to be home the following week for a stretch after being on the road. I still had a lot of interviews that week to continue discussing the concussion settlement and www.fortheplayers.com
After recharging my batteries, I got back on a plane and flew across the country for our divisional round matchup against the red-hot Carolina Panthers. I had dinner at a very good spot in uptown Charlotte called 5 Church. We also filmed some segments and did a pre-game show the night before at the Bank of America Stadium.
The next day was our game, which I thought we were totally prepared to play and would match up well against. However, we came out flat and Carolina jumped on top of us with a 31-0 lead at half time. We made a valiant effort, scoring 24 points in the second half but came up short to the Panthers who could possibly become the Super Bowl champs.
The next week I flew back down to Orange County and met with Angela La Chica to discuss our PR strategy for the Super Bowl and the rest of the month. While at the S1M office, I also met with Neda Eaton from the Irvine Public School Foundation to discuss future projects and how we are going to continue working together to raise money for education.
On Friday I went up to Manhattan Beach and had dinner with a bunch of my old high school buddies, we get together 3-4 times a year over dinner and reminisce old times. They were mentors to me when I was in high school and helped me become the player I was by competing against older and bigger guys every day.
I came back up to Seattle for the weekend and hosted an NFL Sunday championship brunch at my house for 18 people to watch the games. I cooked all different types of brunch and tailgate food and enjoyed the games with good company.
I left the following Tuesday for Hawaii to start preparing for our sold-out 17th annual Pro Bowl fundraiser that benefits St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
I did some local interviews and went on television Wednesday morning to promote the event, which we held at the Top of Waikiki and Sky Waikiki. We had a tremendous turnout from the local community and visitors who were in town for the Pro Bowl. We had Hall of Famers and current players in attendance for the dinner reception and all the sponsors had a great time networking with each other and seeing what we do for St. Jude. Afterward, we went to Sky Waikiki and had an after party to celebrate the event and the Pro Bowl.
On Friday, I hosted a BBQ for all of our staff and interns to unwind and enjoy the beautiful Hawaiin weather. I cooked a big spread of food for everyone and together we all celebrated a successful reception and party.
On Saturday, I began my day with a two-hour appearance at the Microsoft store and really enjoyed getting to meet all the fans and hear their favorite Pro Bowl stories and memories. Afterward, I met up with our team for another employee excursion. We rented a catamaran and headed out on the ocean to go snorkeling and swimming with the turtles. It gave everyone a chance to relax and enjoy Hawaii after all of the hard work. After all, our company motto is to “make a lot of money, help a lot of people and have a lot of fun” and we definitely made sure we did all three.
The month closed out with the Pro Bowl being played on Sunday. I was really disappointed with some of the players efforts in the game and the NFL has a big decision to make with what they are going to do with the game moving forward. With that being said, Russell Wilson and Michael Bennett both had outstanding performances and as a result, they were named offensive and defensive MVP’s respectively.
I’m really looking forward to February to see who the Super Bowl champion will be. Other than that, we have a lot of events planned with the Crescent Moon Foundation and Sports 1 Marketing in the next 4 months, so stay tuned.
