The month started off with a trip to Juneau, Alaska to speak at the Glacier Valley Rotary’s Pillars of America. They put on an annual speaker series hosting three different speakers who have overcome adversity and demonstrated perseverance in their lives to turn it into a success. In addition to citizens in the Juneau area, the Chamber of Commerce brings about 200 select kids from the school district to listen to the speakers. I along with the other speakers shared our success stories in hopes of motivating and inspiring the kids to not only one day have their own story to share, but to hopefully avoid some of the mistakes we made along the way.
I was honored to be selected for the event. It was great getting to meet the people of Juneau, enjoy the great food up there, and sign a lot of autographs for the kids. It’s always great going up to Alaska since there are a ton of Seahawks fans, and it’s one of the most scenic places in America.
I arrived in Louisville on Thursday morning where we attended a welcome reception later that evening for everyone involved in the Unbridled Eve fundraiser, one of the reasons I attend the Derby annually. The fundraiser benefits “Blessings in a Backpack”, which is an incredible foundation I have discussed before. They provide school supplies and nourishment for underprivileged kids on the weekends who otherwise couldn’t afford it.
I was also there on behalf of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, along with Shannon Sharpe and Thurman Thomas. We were there to participate in interviews, chalk talks, and Q&A sessions to promote HOF Experiences and all the incredible events they put on throughout the year.
The derby itself is always a great time because I get a chance to reunite with friends from all over the country who meet in Louisville for the weekend. It’s one of my favorite weekends of the year and Louisville does an outstanding job hosting the event.
After the Derby, I traveled back to Seattle to host a Casino Night with my Crescent Moon Foundation, put on by the store David Lawrence in Seattle. It was a fun night of play-gambling, raffle prizes, silent auction and great food. It was the first time we held this fundraiser, but we feel we can build it into a larger event next year, as we raised over $20,000 for the Crescent Moon Foundation.
My foundation director Iris came up to Seattle to help organize the event, and it was a very successful evening raising scholarships for the local community.
We jumped on the Ferry the next day over to Bremerton to speak at the Kitsap Foundation. The foundation initially started off to raise money for the local educational programs in the school district but quickly developed to provide support for the entire community’s needs. This is their major fundraiser of the year, and they invited me to be the keynote speaker. I spoke about why philanthropy is so important, and how it has become so involved in everything I do.
The next week, I came down to the office in Orange County for meetings with some of our partners and enjoyed a great sushi dinner with friends and co-workers.
The next morning, we caught a flight with our partners Wheels Up and flew to Cabos San Lucas for the weekend to relax after all the hard work we have put in so far this year. We stayed at a beautiful villa, had great dinners, enjoyed the warm weather and relaxed by the pool.
I’ve been on the road constantly for the past 3 weeks, so it was nice to have a relaxing vacation followed by 10 days at home in Seattle, including over Memorial Day Weekend. I visited a series of BBQ’s all three days and was able to contribute my own recipes to each one I stopped by. Being home, I had a chance to watch the Seahawks during OTA’s. I am really encouraged by the young draft picks and free agent signings. There is a big re-dedication by the veterans, and their attitude is rubbing off on the younger guys. I expect them to have another very competitive season.
It was nice to be home and recharge my batteries before the month of June, which is going to be extremely busy, highlighted by a trip to Kenya to see the village we built through our fundraising efforts last year. We will discuss that and much more in next month’s newsletter.
