It is always easy to tell when you enter the month of August, the month associated with the smell of the grass because it’s time for football season. It’s also a big month because I hosted my second scholarship reception up in Seattle as well as the Hall of Fame weekend, where I had one of the most gratifying weekends of my life.
I started off the month going to Canton, OH for the Pro Football Hall of Fame weekend. I began the weekend Thursday just as I got off the plane and drove directly to downtown, where I participated in the First Play program. First Play is a program where we take 2500 kids from the community and we take a football and pass it from one kid downtown, all the way to the Hall of Fame. And we present it at the HOF to start the beginning of a new football season.
I did that along with James Lofton, Paul Krause, Chris Doleman and John Randall. In the afternoon I went to the football fields at McKinley High School for a skills clinic with 600 kids in the Canton/Akron community. We had 15 Hall of Famers involved, along with local high school coaches, to provide the young kids an opportunity to compete in football related skills for two hours.
That evening at the Canton Civic Center, all 140 Gold Jackets were introduced to a sell-out crowd at the Gold Jacket dinner, where the new inductees are presented their jackets and are officially announced as members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Friday morning, we all assembled for the State of the Hall, which gave President Dave Baker an opportunity to present to all the Hall of Famers the different programs and opportunities in the works for the upcoming year. After the State of the Hall, all Hall of Famers gather for an exclusive Ray Nitschke luncheon, where everyone shares stories about what football means to their lives. It’s one of the best events of the entire weekend.
That evening, I had a chance to attend the Tim McGraw concert, who performed at the HOF stadium. We had an opportunity to go backstage and meet Tim before the show and he put on a one that evening!
On Saturday after the parade, we had a couple of autograph sessions and I headed to the airport to head home. Every time I leave Canton I’m like a little kid, having rubbed elbows and broken bread with some of my favorite football heroes from my childhood and guys that I played against and with. It’s a great weekend.
The following Tuesday I flew down to the Sports 1 offices for our summer intern appreciation party, to reward them for a job well done.
The next day I flew to New York City, where I participated in a Flag Football game for the media buyers of the NFL. Myself and Chad Pennington were quarterbacks for the opposing teams, but I’m sad to say I came out on the losing end 26-17. Right after the game, I went straight to the airport to catch a flight to Kansas City, where our Sports 1 Marketing team was assembled for a bunch of meeting over the next couple days. Meetings included Athlete Network, Kansas City Royals, Sprint Center, and the American Royal, who organize one of the largest bbq cook-offs in the country. I’d be remiss if I didn’t visit some of my favorite restaurant spots in Kansas City, Gram and Dunn. The next day for lunch we went to Johnny’s BBQ, one of my favorite BBQ spots.
Then on Saturday afternoon, I broadcast our first preseason game against the Chiefs where we came from behind to score on a 2-point conversion and beat the Chiefs 17-16.
The following Tuesday in Seattle I had dinner with a former teammate and very good friend, Tony Gonzalez, who’s now a broadcaster for CBS’ NFL Today. I took him to an exquisite restaurant in Seattle called RN74.
The next day I had a meeting with the Fashion First team, as we prepare for a big fundraiser and fashion show on September 16th in Seattle. I also did an interview with a new fundraiser app called “The School of Life”. They interview different athletes in sports about the journey they took to become successful athletes. That night we were treated to dinner at a great seafood restaurant in Bellevue called Seastock.
The next evening it was time for our second preseason game against the Vikings, but we also had our Northwest Scholarship Celebration. We presented six scholarships to western Washington high school students. Again, my scholarship evenings are some of my most special times, because it’s my way of contributing to the education of our youth and helping them to become successful in life. Unfortunately, the Vikings came into CenturyLink field and beat the Seahawks 18-11.
The next day I hopped back on a plane to Canton, Ohio to participate in the Hall of Fame Fantasy Football Conference. We brought in six fantasy experts from around the country, in addition to myself and Hall of Famers Anthony Munoz and Chris Dolman. We had an audience of 200+ people who were looking to get all their fantasy questions answered, as we get ready for a new fantasy football season. The evening started out with a dinner, and the next day was devoted to all the different positions as people get ready to draft their teams.
The next day I flew back home and participated in the Rumble at the Ridge, which is a Seahawks celebrity golf tournament that benefits the Benaroya Research Institute. There were over 30 former players and Seahawks in attendance, including Mike Haynes, Ricky Waters, Jim Zorn and Lynn Swann. While at the golf tournament, we taped our Seahawks all-access show live on location. Overall, the tournament raised over $50,000.
On Tuesday night I participated as a celebrity waiter for the Brotherton Cadillac’s Celebrity Steak-Out at Morton’s Steakhouse. It benefits the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and together we raised over $250k that evening.
On Friday I flew back down to Orange County to spend the weekend. I had a chance to go to the Dodgers vs. Cubs game and had dinner that evening in Manhattan Beach at a great restaurant called the Fish Bar.
I flew back to Seattle after my relaxing weekend in southern California. On Monday I participated in the Business & Burgers video series presented by Microsoft. The series focuses on successful entrepreneurs who have transitioned through hardship in their life to get where they are today.
On Thursday I flew to Oakland to broadcast our final pre-season game against the Oakland Raiders. It wasn’t the most exciting game because it was mostly young guys fighting to make the football team. We ended up squeaking out a come from behind victory 23-21.
Now that we have the preseason behind us, having participated in a ton of successful fundraisers over the summer, it’s time to get busy for the regular season of the NFL and some very exciting business opportunities for Sports 1 Marketing.
Let’s not forget we have one of our largest fundraisers on September 16th during Fashion Week. Stay tuned for more details on that event in next month’s newsletter.
