March is always a great month with spring in the air and lots of March Madness on TV. As a result, it’s one of my favorite times of the year because of my love of college basketball and especially this year with the Final Four located in my pseudo-hometown of Houston, TX.
March began similar to any other month, lots of interviews. However, this past month my focused was shifted to promoting Practice Like Pros in the United States and Canada while also discussing NFL Free Agency and all the player movement happening throughout the league.
I traveled down to San Diego to speak with high school coaches at the Practice Like Pros Nike Coach of the Year Clinic. Practice Like Pros is an organization that’s trying to cut down on the number of concussions high school students encounter by reducing the amount of contact in practice. Around 70% of high school concussions happen during practice, and together we are educating the coaches on proper technique, new equipment, concussion protocols, and how they teach the game.
The following week, David and I drove up to Pasadena to meet with the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation for our first board meeting of the year. We met to discuss all the different plans and initiatives we have for the stadium renovations, including possibly building a museum to preserve the history and artifacts of the historical venue. The meeting was held in the Terry Donahue Pavilion and it was great to see Terry, who is also on the board.
After the meeting, David and I drove to downtown Los Angeles for dinner at WP24, Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant, with a chance to catch up on Sports 1 and the plans for the future of our company.
Two days later I went up to the City of Industry for a Frank & Sons collectible show attended by a lot of the top athletes in football and baseball.
After the show, I was back on a plane up to Seattle for the Art Institute of Seattle’s Fashion show, where the Crescent Moon Foundation was the sole beneficiary. It was a great evening of fashion and rewarded the hard work of their top students. My Crescent Moon Foundation will provide a couple scholarships to the Art Institute students to continue their education.
Next stop was Houston, where I visited my kids and grandkids and attended the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. We went to two nights of performances at the Rodeo and saw Florida Georgia Line and Little Big Town concerts. We ate a lot of unhealthy food that tasted really good, but overall it was great family time.
From Houston, I traveled back to Los Angeles to meet up with my high school friends for our tradition of watching one weekend of March Madness. This year’s meeting took place at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles, where I watched my bracket get busted as Michigan State went down early.
After we left the games, it was time to put on my tuxedo and get ready for the Unstoppable Foundation Gala at the JW Marriott in LA Live. It was an amazing night raising money for what the Unstoppable Foundation is all about, building sustainable villages for families in Kenya. Last year I sponsored a village, and later this year I’ll be traveling to Kenya to see the completed village. We will discuss that later after the visit.
After the Unstoppable Gala, we all got together as a company and with our friends and sponsors at Nest WP24 to unwind after another successful gala.
Then it was back to Seattle to relax for a few days, before traveling to Minneapolis for a memorabilia singing at the Ridgedale Mall’s Fan HQ. It was great to see so many of my old Minnesota Vikings fans from the years I was there, and it was a great turnout. The next day I did an appearance at the Manion Supply tradeshow at the River’s Edge Convention Center. I talked about my career, leadership, business and different strategies for being successful in business.
Then it was back to Seattle, to attend a birthday party for a good friend of ours who owns a swimwear line. They had a fashion show of her new line and the theme of the night was an 80’s party, which made for a night of good laughs.
After that, I flew back down to Texas for the Trees for Houston Root Ball where I was the honorary chairman. Trees for Houston is a non-profit that plants and cares for trees across the greater Houston region to help beautify the city. They have planted over 500,000 trees since its inception. With Houston hosting the Final Four this year and Super Bowl next year they have a lot of work to do to make the city look its best for primetime.
David and I had a great time down in Houston for the final four. On Friday evening, we attended a party at David Gow’s home and Saturday we attended the Final Four games. Congratulations to Villanova on winning the 2016 NCAA Championship and to Houston for hosting a successful final four.
